Build Hi-Five Snack Packs for Kids

Service Project FREEFLO.jpg

All supplies will be provided. Project benefits Second Harvest’s program in local elementary schools.

One in four children in Florida is food-insecure.

The Hi-Five Kids Pack program was started in 2006 to support the educators that came to Second Harvest looking for a solution to students that were coming to school sick and unable to learn on Monday because they had not eaten since their school lunch the previous Friday.

Second Harvest Food Bank partners with elementary schools that have a significant percentage of student participation in free and reduced lunch programs. In 2018, 20,718 weekend food packs were provided to children at Central Florida elementary schools. The food packs contain a variety of kid-friendly items such as cereal, shelf-stable milk and juice, fruit cups and more. These Hi-Five Kids Packs are prepared by dedicated volunteers.

Since 2006, more than 314,700 packs have been distributed – the equivalent of 944,244 meals. The Hi-Five Kids Pack Program has been made possible by funding from generous sponsors and individuals and organizations who help assemble and distribute the packs. This is making a difference for families in Central Florida!

Materials supplied through the Second Harvest Food Bank. Through donations and grants this project will be a part of FREEFLO. Attendees will be putting the packs together with supplies.

Service

Service and participation means putting values into action in ways that positively impact our communities and society as a whole. It fosters helping others, increasing social awareness, enhancing accountability, and many attributes of the other nine commitments. Engaging in service doesn’t just make the recipients better off, but those who serve can develop new skills, experiences, and personal satisfaction that all promote personal growth. We must all recognize that we are members of a group, and engaging in service to benefit the group and the other individuals in it makes us all better off. (AHA, 10 Commitments)
